The Brown Book

Diary Entry of March 11, 1868

Overview

Two satirical sonnets ridicule David Strauss's defence of Franz Lachner. Wagner mixes theological mockery with animal imagery to attack an artistic alliance he sees as hostile to him.

Wednesday, March 11:

An David Strauss
I.
O David! Held!
II.
Nun kommt heran, vereint euch, edle Hunde,

To David Strauss
I.
O David! Hero! Straussest of the Strausses!
Deliverer from delusion’s weighty chains!
May us redeem from error and deception
your exposé of humbug in the Gospels!
How beautifully now, at home also in art,
you’re able, with sweet sonnets made of doubt,
to make for us a bed of charming peace,
saving what’s beautiful from dread destruction.
Pitiless researcher into fictions,
spurious age you can deduce with ease,
discover instant cures for pseudo-gout:
But who will now berate you a denier?
If, for you, the Saviour Christ’s not proven,
you let Franz Lachner serve as well instead.
II.
Come now, join together, noble dogs,
true and worthy haters of the cat!
Now bark, now howl a righteous dirge
to the revised text of new alliance!
Regal David brought the news himself
that, upon corporeal seraphs’ pinions,
the avatar of beauty had descended,
but he, alas, was brought low by a cat.
Protect him could not even Caterina,
albeit hailing truly from Cornaro,
to live forever, as proved e’en by Strauss.

Time now to back the Newest Testament:
O you of David now inflamed by sonnet,
arise you dogs, for feline blood shall flow!

Evening.
