Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Emil Heckel

February 9, 1874 · Bayreuth

Overview

A jubilant note: the King of Bavaria has come to the rescue, and the undertaking in which Heckel has played so serious a part is assured. Wagner adds that he knew the approach through the Grand Duke would be fruitless, since his cause needs a 'sapient fool'.

Letter

Dear good Friend Heckel,
Now sit you tight!
'Twill all come right!

With His Majesty the thing is settled: the undertaking, in which you play so splendidly serious a part, is assured. Details presently!

I knew that that would all be fruitless: my cause requires a "sapient fool!" — but who is foolish nowadays?

In great haste!

With all my heart
Your

Richard Wagner.

And Zeroni?? Aha!!
