Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Emil Heckel

Undated · Bayreuth

Overview

A brief, weary note wishing Heckel a long life, so that someone will remain after Wagner's death to serve as a root for further cultivation; he understands everything but can only wait for others to catch up with him.

Letter

My dear Heckel!

God grant you long life, at least decidedly longer than mine, in order that someone will be there after my death who in himself shall furnish a root for further cultivation.

I understand everything, but say little—if possible, no more—about it. I can do nothing but wait until someone from the outside follows after, as I seem to be considerably in advance!

Cordial greetings!

Yours,

Richard Wagner.
