Wagner's Letters

Mathilde Wesendonck to Richard Wagner

October 20, 1863 · Zurich

Overview

A short note: Mathilde hopes to see Wagner soon in Zurich, before or after his Karlsruhe concerts, and reports that Otto, now in the eighth week of his illness, is slowly recovering, a crisis the doctors believe may benefit his general health.

Letter

Your "yesterday's," to which you refer, unfortunately has not reached me, but I thank you for yours of to-day.

I am hoping to see you soon in Zurich, whether before or after the Carlsruhe performances. Our patient is getting better day by day; still, we are entering the 8th week now, and his strength returns but slowly. Nevertheless we are hoping that this crisis may have paved the way for a beneficial change in Otto's general health, which long had left much to be desired; and in that we are supported by the verdict of the doctors.

Now, auf Wiedersehen in good earnest, and greetings from all the heart of

Your Mathilde Wesendonck.
