Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Mathilde Wesendonck

Undated · Zurich

Overview

Wagner's farewell note on the morning he left the Asyl for good: he departs tranquilly, wholly hers wherever he may be, and asks her to try to keep the Asyl for him, repeating "auf Wiedersehen" to the "dear soul of my soul."

Letter

Farewell! Farewell, dear love!

I'm leaving tranquilly. Where'er I be, I shall be wholly thine now. Try to keep the Asyl for me. Auf Wiedersehen! Auf Wiedersehen! Dear soul of my soul, farewell — auf Wiedersehen! —
