Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Elisabeth Nietzsche

April 8, 1873 · Bayreuth

Overview

Touched that Nietzsche's sister had saved to buy her brother a Bayreuth patron's certificate, Wagner presents her with one of her own from the fund raised on his concert tour, joking that she economized while he earned the money by conducting, and wondering which of them perspired more.

Letter

My dear Fräulein,

You are not the only person who can create Patrons. I can also do this—the money you saved by economizing, I earned by conducting, and I should like to know which one of us perspired the more?

At all events, when the time arrives, you will come to Bayreuth as a full-fledged patron. Cordial greetings from my wife.
