Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Franz Liszt

August 13, 1860 · Frankfurt

Overview

Wagner arranges to meet Liszt at Baden-Baden, where he will wait on the Princess of Prussia, whose intercession has at last moved the King of Saxony to relent, and sound her on help with his new works.

Letter

[...] It is heavenly to think that I shall see you on Thursday! Surely it won't be too much for you to come as far as Baden-Baden? [...] I can spend the whole of Friday there and need not set out for Paris till Saturday. That is the plan I am driven to. One chief motive of my expedition is to wait on the Princess of Prussia, as Seebach assured me that it was really her recent very urgent intercession which I have to thank for at last bringing the King of Saxony to his senses. Seebach recommended me to write to her, whereupon I decided forthwith that it would be preferable to present myself to her in person, as I should like [...] to find out whether I may hope for any future help from this lady in producing my new works. The fact that I shall have to consider this question more closely now, is another reason for wanting very much to have a talk with you. [...]
