Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Eliza Wille

May 18, 1852 · Zurich

Overview

Wagner's first letter to Eliza Wille accepts her invitation to Mariafeld, though not for the coming Sunday, as he has just retired to the country near Zurich to recover from his recent exertions.

Letter

Honoured Lady!

I have just come into the country near town, to recover from my late exertions under the influence, it is to be hoped, of fair weather and open air. Among my restoratives I in any case shall count a visit, and with your permission several visits, to Mariafeld; indeed it would not have needed your friendly invitation, to determine me. Only, I should not wish to leave my scarcely-entered refuge quite so soon as next Sunday, and therefore beg you on behalf of myself and my wife, who is very grateful for your greetings, not to expect us till a later Sunday.

Begging you to convey my best compliments to Herr Wille, I am

Yours gratefully and faithfully

Richard Wagner.
