Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Herman Zumpe

December 4, 1877 · Bayreuth

Overview

Wagner tells his former assistant Herman Zumpe that he will recommend him wherever he wishes, but that theatre intendants dislike him personally and he cannot obtain posts for anyone, and counsels patience.

Letter

Dear friend,

If you tell me where I should recommend you, I shall do so. - Bülow has obtained Hanover - I know of no other posts there. All these intendants have a personal dislike of me. I cannot obtain posts for anyone: I tried it in Munich for Fischer, but they treated him so badly that he couldn’t stay, whereas everything has turned out very well for him in Mannheim - why? - because Heckel has gained influence there.

Really, it can only torment me to know that people think I could help them but that I do not wish to do so. Theatres are now a foreign place to me. - What then? Patience! It was just the same for me!

Best wishes.

Yours truly,
R. Wagner.
