Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Franz Liszt

Undated · Zurich

Overview

In a jubilant note, Wagner tells Liszt that the great scene in The Rhinegold is finished, revealing undreamt-of riches: everything within him seethes and makes music, and he is in love.

Letter

My friend! I am in a state of wonderment! A new world stands revealed before me. The great scene in the Rhinegold is finished: I see before me riches such as I never dared suspect. I now consider my powers to be immeasurable: everything seethes within me and makes music. It is - oh, I am in love! - and so divine a faith inspires me that I have no need any longer - even of hope! Kind regards to the “spectral man”! You’ll now be receiving a great deal of things to do for me: prepare yourself. I’ll write again soon.

Yours,
Richard W.
