I am herewith returning the corrected proofs.
You can very easily hire a German compositor for your work. In the agreement we concluded, everything depends on the strictness with which you can watch that no proof and certainly no copy slip out among the public, since I am bearing the expenses of printing fifteen copies of this autobiography with the sole purpose of avoiding the possible loss of this single manuscript and of putting them into the hands of faithful and responsible friends who must keep them for a distant future. I could make a lot of money, instead of spending it for this printing job, if I wanted to sell this manuscript to a publisher for publication. Thus, the first basis for our agreement is the greatest discretion on your part. You must know whether you can entrust the work to a compositor who understands German perfectly, since the essential point is to watch only that neither the manuscript nor a page of the printed material be removed, which will be prevented if you scrupulously destroy every corrected proof, and if you comply with our agreement conscientiously and don't prepare more than the fifteen copies we agreed on which should be sent to me immediately after they are printed. You know that of the first four sheets I have received only a single copy. Besides, pages 65 to 96 are missing from the manuscript which was returned. Would you please see whether Mr. Nietzsche doesn't have them.
