Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Unknown benefactor

March 16, 1858 · Zurich

Overview

Wagner thanks an unnamed benefactor, a friend of Liszt's, for his continued kindness, asks him to forward money deposited for him, and sends warm greetings to Liszt, whose visit he envies.

Letter

Highly honored Sir!

I thank you cordially for your continued considerate kindness toward me. Your last letter was forwarded to me several days ago from Paris, which I left some time since, and because I gather from it among other things that some money has again been deposited with you for me, I make bold to ask you to send me this small amount also. Unfortunately, I can always use money! If any more arrives for me—and may your kind messages hold this prospect—I ask you to continue to send it to me; for the time being I'm staying in Zurich again.

Since our friend Liszt will already have arrived at your house by now, give him my warmest regards and tell him how much I envy you for having him with you. I'm too wretched to write much about it! I should be the more cheered when I hear so many gratifying things about him and his activities, and I hope that I may have induced you, honored sir, if he should not have the time to write—to do so.

When I try to express in some measure my gratitude for your great favors, I can only refer to him. I asked you for these favors in his name, and may he now personally reward you for them; it is, unfortunately, completely beyond my power to reciprocate!

With the friendliest regards and the assurance of my most grateful consideration, I remain

your most devoted
Richard Wagner
