Overview

Wagner describes his water-cure routine at Albisbrunn: carried pickaback to the bath each morning by an attendant named Abraham, wrapped in wet sheets to sweat, and otherwise frightfully bored.

Letter

Here I am in Abraham's bosom—or at least on Abraham's back—for my bathing attendant is called Abraham, and every morning he carries me pickaback down to the bath wrapped in a woolen blanket like a mummy. I am pleased with the doctor; yesterday he put me through a dry perspiration, but that caused heart congestion, and he changed it so that I perspire now from being wrapped in wet sheets up to the chest. This did me a great deal of good today—I have perspired sulphur prodigiously. I take many walks. Otherwise it's frightfully tedious.
