Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Minna Wagner

May 28, 1849 · Rorschach

Overview

Wagner's first words from Swiss soil after crossing Lake Constance on a borrowed passport: he is safe at last and about to go on to St. Gallen and Zurich.

Letter

In the morning, 7:30.

My dear true Wife:

I have safely arrived in Swiss territory! I hoped to be able to write you from here a day sooner, but unfortunately the journey progressed very slowly, many stops, etc. The passport only was demanded in Lindau, and the visa for Switzerland was granted without any fuss.

This morning I came here from Lindau, across the Bodensee, and in half an hour I am to go on to St. Gallen and Zürich. In Zürich I am to treat myself to a little rest so as to write you at length.

I am in safety!

May God keep you cheerful! I have grieved for your sake, but my spirits have returned. Goodbye, my dear best wife! More tomorrow from Zürich.

Your
R. W.

[On the envelope:] Dearest Eduard: Convey this to Minna quickly!
