Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Emil Heckel

January 14, 1883 · Venice

Overview

One of the last letters between them: Wagner thanks Heckel, mocks the 'discreet' Mannheim telegraph officials, and urges him to engage the Augsburg conductor Frank, whom he guarantees. The 1883 festival is to be only twelve July performances, and he says he will fret no more but be massaged twice a day.

Letter

Dear Friend,

Thanks, congratulations — for past and future; also my humble compliments to the discreet telegraph-officials at Mannheim.

And now: — after all, my wife has forgotten to tell you what I now retrieve: — do engage the Augsburg Frank for your theatre; I guarantee him, and consider him excellent in every respect. You already will know how to pass him in; if at the time of your former exit they gave you a reactionary as schoolmaster, and Fischer therefore had to go, things now might happen vice versa.

As you have seen, other powers don't stick at trifles! Think it over, and be assured — etc.

Gross was here yesterday: this time we are only to have July, and 12 performances. Well, well! I fret myself at nothing more, and now shall let myself be massaged twice a day!

The like is wished you by
Your
very trusty

Rich. Wagner.
