Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Emil Heckel

April 11, 1877 · Bayreuth

Overview

After Heckel's report on the Leipzig meeting of delegates, where he defeated a plan to move the festivals to Leipzig, Wagner wishes him a long life so that someone may carry on the planting after Wagner's death. He feels he has strode too far ahead of others.

Letter

My dear Heckel,

God grant you long life, at anyrate a good deal longer than my own, that there may be somebody, after my death, to form a stock — in himself — for further planting!

I understand all, but say little now; wherever possible, nothing. I can do no else than wait until outsiders catch me up, for I seem to have stridden too far ahead!

Hearty greeting!
Your

Rich. Wagner.
