Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 13, 1871

Overview

A bad night leaves Wagner anxious about a future journey that might separate him from Cosima. Winter arrives with snow and wind, prompting thoughts about earth, sun, and artistic influence, while the banker still fails to answer. Cosima teaches, Wagner works only a little on the act, and Plato's Republic fills the evening.

R. says, "I should like to read an intelligent book about Tellus and Sol and their influence." Then he quotes Semper, who once told him that Michelangelo's Madonna in Florence is tellurian. The banker sends no word; a real worry! Worked with the children. R. on his act, but cannot work much. In the evening read Plato's Republic.
