Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 30, 1871

Overview

Vienna sends encouraging society news and a request for Wagner to conduct, while Batka's letter tangles the Dr. Lang payment affair further. Wagner spends the morning demanding clarity through correspondence, and Cosima finally sends a carefully shown letter to her father. Indoors during wet weather, the children make tableaux, and Constantin Frantz's book prompts interest tempered by doubts about its grasp of political fact.

Content

Saturday, September 30:

Letter from Dr. Kafka: the Society in Vienna is making great strides, contains fifty members from all walks of life, and now wishes very much for R. to conduct several concerts. Also a letter from Herr Batka, reporting that Dr. Lang paid over the money in question to Hans Richter; a fine imbroglio!

R. has to devote his morning to correspondence and is demanding clarity, even if, as he says, he must be prepared to hear unpleasant things. I write to my father and send the letter off after showing it to R.

Dull, wet weather; the children prepare tableaux vivants, in which Lusch displays much skill and invention. Constantin Frantz sends his book Das neue Deutschland in the hope of convincing R.; there are certainly some excellent things in it, but no recognition of the power of facts.
