Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 17, 1871

Overview

Loldi's dangerous night leaves Cosima at her bedside while the doctor fears diphtheria. News arrives of Bulow's possible Berlin Wagneriana and of the burning of Richter's theater in Pest, but illness dominates the household. Wagner resolves on an October Bayreuth foundation stone ceremony, and a meteor he sees becomes for Cosima a welcome sign, even though she misses it herself.

Sunday, September 17:

Loldi had a terrible night; I stayed up with her throughout. In the morning, however, she is a bit better, but the doctor fears diphtheria. Marie Schleinitz writes that Buelow is to conduct the Wagneriana in Berlin, but I can scarcely believe it. Richter’s National Theater in Pest has been burned down.

A few words about Fidi’s speech omitted. I spend the day in anxiety at Loldi’s bedside, leaving her only for an hour to take the other four children for a drive.

R. goes out then, too. He has resolved to lay the foundation stone in Bayreuth in October, is thinking solemnly and resolutely about it, and in this very moment a meteor appears such as he has never seen before, crossing the sky horizontally. I did not see it, which I at first regret a little, but then hardly at all; so long as he sees the favorable signs!
