Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 12, 1871

Overview

Wagner's bad night and worsening abdominal troubles make him too ill-humored to visit Countess Bassenheim, so Cosima goes reluctantly alone. Loulou and Fidi are still unwell, and Cosima senses how painful it must be for Wagner that admirers avoid speaking of the Bayreuth venture. Her return home is met with his joking but real displeasure at her absence.

Tuesday, September 12:

R. again had a very bad night; his foot is better, but his abdominal troubles are worse. Visit from Countess B. Prince Georg wants to meet us this evening at her house. R. feels too unwell and ill-humored, and asks me to go alone, which I do reluctantly.

Loulou is somewhat better, but still in bed; Fidi is also unwell. Letter from Elisabeth Krockow in Gmunden.

The evening with Countess B. passes tolerably well. It must be very wounding for R., the way all his admirers, among whom Prince Georg can also be counted, carefully avoid talking about our venture. R. does not like me to leave the house, and he was a bit ill-humored when I came home, though in a joking manner.
