Sunday, September 3:

Our friend has left. Letter from Vienna that Betz brought forth a real storm of applause in Die Meistersinger; this news is very welcome to R., now at last Die Meistersinger is being given again in Vienna. Letter from M. Schleinitz, to which I reply straight away, saying it will not be possible for us to visit them in Engelberg.

It turns out, through the vet, that Rus has been poisoned and that the woman from yesterday knew about it and, assuming his death, had planned a robbery attempt. I had heard footsteps and, during our evening walk, noticed that someone was hiding in the bushes, though R. laughed off my fears. Rus, however, who had at first growled, ran at once to the open salon door and lay down across it, the loyal watchdog.

Sultry afternoon, visit from Baron Uechtritz from Meiningen. In the evening Carlyle.
