Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 28, 1871

Overview

Autumnal weather frames a productive day of lessons, composing, and practical musical imagining for Hagen's Call. Nietzsche relays medical advice for Fidi, while Cosima balances Bach exercises with meeting Wagner after his long walk. Nohl's respectful restraint outside Tribschen touches them, and the evening returns to Carlyle.

Content

Monday, August 28:

Fine day, with a touch of autumn already in the air. Work with the children. R. composes, and tells me that he does not intend to assemble a large chorus at “Hagen’s Call,” but individual vassals who appear from the farmsteads nearby.

Letter from Prof. Nietzsche, saying that Dr. Liebermeister in Basel strongly recommends iron and calcium for Fidi. R. goes for a long walk; I drive to meet him after taking Lusch through Bach’s exercises for beginners.

Prof. Nohl sends another book about Beethoven and touches us by telling us that he had been in Lucerne, had looked at Tribschen from the outside, but had been reminded by the sign outside it, “Entry Prohibited,” that everybody must be careful not to disturb. In the evening Carlyle.
