Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 25, 1871

Overview

On their wedding day, Wagner greets Cosima with comic self-congratulation and flowers arrive from friends. Political and court troubles continue through Duflipp's letter, while Wagner's own health interrupts his work. He nevertheless marks the day with a new melody for the children to sing to Cosima, and the family celebrates with an outing to Emmenbruck before closing the evening with Carlyle.

Friday, August 25:

Our wedding day! R. comes to me early in the morning and congratulates himself.

Letter from Councilor Duefflipp saying that he has been seriously considering asking for his dismissal; once again he can do nothing right for the King. Marie Schleinitz and Caroline Bassenheim send us flowers. R. says, “A fine coincidence, I must now compose ‘Hagen’s Wedding Call’; it is marvelously pretty!”

I write to Alwine Frommann. Around noon I go to visit R. and find him unwell; he has had to break off his work. But when I come down to lunch he receives me with a melody he has written for this day, which the children are to sing to me on ceremonial occasions.

In the afternoon drive with the children to Emmenbrueck: coffee, honey, doughnuts, and the Titlis in all its glory. Beautiful evening. After supper, Carlyle.
