Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 9, 1871

Overview

Cosima is somewhat recovered and resumes both the children's lessons and her translations, though Fidi remains troublesome. Wagner also translates but resents the work as a waste of time. An evening visit to Countess Bassenheim introduces Countess Ugarte, whom Cosima likes, yet the simple act of leaving home unsettles the close domestic rhythm.

Content

Wednesday, August 9:

Somewhat better; I can work with the children and translate, though there is trouble with Fidi. R. also translates, but complains of having thus to fritter away his time.

In the evening with Countess Bassenheim, with whom a Countess Ugarte, a former acquaintance of R.’s, is staying. I like her very much. But the unaccustomed act of leaving my home makes its mark on the evening.
