Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 7, 1871

Overview

A full day of Bayreuth-related conference tests the household's patience and judgment. Neumann appears clumsy in discussion, while Brandt impresses Cosima as practical, serious, inventive, and deeply committed to the work. After the Neumanns leave, conversation also turns to the planned house before Brandt departs in the evening.

Content

Monday, August 7:

Conference all day, in which our good Neumann conducts himself like “a bull in a china shop”; the excellent Brandt, however, efficient, intelligent, earnest, and inventive; he is utterly inspired by his task.

The Neumanns depart after we also discussed our house; Brandt stays until evening.
