Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 4, 1871

Overview

Cosima spends the morning teaching, then joins Fritz and Praeger at lunch while Wagner reviews her translations of his essays. A boat trip to town, ices, and a walk home give the day a relaxed family texture. Letters and odd requests intrude in the evening, including Wagner's displeasure at Schure's patronage matter and a blunt proposal that he compose a setting of Die Braut von Messina.

Friday, August 4:

Gave the children their lessons. Lunch with Fritz and Herr Praeger. R. goes over my translation of his essays. To town by boat, visit the Lion, eat ices, home on foot.

Letter from friend Schuré, who is surprised that Karl Tausig did not send him a certificate of patronage; R. finds it repugnant to have him, a disloyal German, as a patron. Conversed during the evening. A man in Vienna writes asking R. to set his libretto of Die Braut von Messina to music, short and to the point. Fritz tells the children the story of Käthchen von Heilbronn.
