Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 2, 1871

Overview

A fine morning is spent with guests and children in the woods, giving the household a calm communal rhythm. Letters arrive from Clemens Brockhaus and Richter, the latter apparently in difficulties. The day turns artistic in the afternoon with Wagner playing from Siegfried, then literary and political in the evening with readings from Kleist.

Content

Wednesday, August 2:

Very fine morning; with our guests and the children in the woods. A letter to me from Clemens Brockhaus, and one to R. from Richter, for whom things are not going particularly well.

Lunch as on the previous days; in the afternoon R. plays passages from Siegfried. In the evening, parts of Heinrich Kleist’s posthumous works, the political catechism.
