Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 20, 1871

Overview

The children continue rehearsing the birthday poem while Richard writes to King Ludwig in gratitude for not demanding Siegfried. Cosima writes her mother and walks with Richard through the quiet, warm landscape of Tribschen. Their return feels like entry into a dream refuge where union makes all burdens bearable.

Saturday, May 20:

Still learning the poem. R. has written to the King, believing him to have made a great sacrifice in not demanding Siegfried. We rehearse our poem. I also write to my mother.

In the afternoon a walk with R.; joy at our return, lovely light, warm everywhere, but no sun, a great, salutary quietness; this is our dream refuge. Never to part; in this union we can bear everything.
