Richard reports an absurd rumor that the Commune may acknowledge Bismarck as a prince of peace. The family goes to the fair, where the children's delight and the apes' antics make a simple domestic pleasure. Evening conversation replaces heavier reading or work.
Thursday, May 18:
R. reports that Bismarck will probably become Lord Protector of France, for the Commune intends to acknowledge him as Prince of the Peace.
With the children to the fair; watched the apes at play; R. also with us. Delight in the little ones. Conversed in the evening.
