Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 6, 1871

Overview

The day after the concert is spent mostly in bed, with only trusted visitors admitted while strength returns. In the evening, Johanna Jachmann's gathering brings Wagner singing, new acquaintances, and a favorable impression of her husband. Cosima and Richard use the occasion to seek support for Bayreuth among sympathetic devotees.

Content

Saturday, May 6:

We spend the day in bed and see only our good Alwine Frommann and Elisabeth Krockow. We get up in the evening to visit Johanna Jachmann.

A large gathering; she sings “Elisabeth’s Prayer,” “Blick ich umher,” and the “Abendstern.” We are quite impressed with her husband, the district magistrate. We get to know Countess Danckelmann, a passionate devotee, and we seek support for Bayreuth.
