Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 25, 1871

Overview

Countess Krockow helps with packing before melancholy farewells in Dresden and expressions of longing from orchestra members who wish to play under Richard again. Cosima feels inwardly closed off and alien among people as they travel to Berlin. Flowers, hotel arrangements, and Marie Schleinitz's warm efficiency please Richard by showing that his rehearsal demands have been granted.

Tuesday, April 25:

Packed with the help of Countess Krockow; visited Frau von Marenholtz with R., a melancholy reunion. His sister Luise with us up to our departure, the members of the orchestra at the station: “If only we could play once more under your baton!”

Off to Berlin. I feel shut up inside; God knows I no longer belong among people. Arrived at 10 o’clock; met with flowers, to the hotel. Marie Schleinitz very friendly and warm; everything Wagner asked for, three rehearsals, so-and-so many violins, etc., has been granted. Wagner very pleased with the friendly lady.
