Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 23, 1871

Overview

Cosima rejoices in seeing Countess Krockow and revisiting Dresden scenes with her. Luise finds Richard gentler and fatherly, thanking Cosima for the courage that Cosima identifies with happiness itself. The evening theater visit is judged through Bayreuth's needs, but the acting's vulgarity and stupidity leave a sad impression.

Sunday, April 23:

Reunion with Countess Krockow, much to my delight. Went for a walk with her, the Bruhl terrace, Wesendoncks, etc.

At two o’clock to Luise’s for lunch; she is pleased with her brother, finds he has become gentler, “fatherly,” thanks me for my courage. My courage is my happiness.

In the evening to the theater; the wooden barn does not displease R., it holds a lot of people. He observes everything with an eye toward Bayreuth. The actors beneath all criticism; their vulgarity, stupidity, etc., etc., is now common throughout Germany. Sad impression.
