Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 15, 1871

Overview

Departure from Tribschen begins with dread, tender farewells to sleeping children, and anxious fantasies of danger in Berlin. In Augsburg, misunderstandings with Dufflipp and Cornelius lead to the grim news that the King has imagined performing only two acts of Siegfried, which Richard rejects absolutely. Museum visits, Nürnberg travel, and a campaign veteran briefly redirect the journey toward art and patriotic reverence.

Content

Saturday, April 15:

At 5 o’clock kissed the sleeping children, then off, dread in my heart. Thoughts of R.’s being murdered by a Berlin Jew. A wait in Zurich; telegraphed and wrote to the children.

In the evening neither Dufflipp nor Cornelius at the station, which surprises us. Misunderstandings; we come together in the Drei Mohren hotel, where attempts are made to whitewash the Moors. Dufflipp not difficult, tells us the cheerless news that the King has been thinking of performing the two acts of Siegfried, since the third is not ready. R. becomes very solemn and says he would burn his Siegfried before yielding it up like that, and then go out begging.

Sunday, April 16: Went to the museum with Cornelius while R. discussed matters with D. Lovely works, a very stylish Moretto, a very beautiful Holbein, and above all a head by da Vinci which had an indescribable effect on me. At 1 o’clock continued on to Nürnberg. Pleasant arrival there; en route a Bavarian officer who had been through the campaign and on whom we gazed with downright veneration.
