Diary Entry of April 13, 1871

Overview

Cosima's eye trouble becomes so severe that she imagines blindness and tries to understand it as possible atonement. Thursday, April 13:

My eye affliction troubles me so severely that I think seriously of going blind; how to bear this, not only to bear it but to welcome it as an act of atonement, occupies me throughout the night.

When I wake, Fidi is brought into my room; his face is as white as a corpse, a terrible shock. Yesterday he had been wrapped in cold cloths, his feet, was left alone by his nurse, woke up, and cried; R. alone heard him, rushed to him, and found him standing up, prey to a chill.

R. utterly beside himself, believes his appearance to be the result of this chill. The doctor reassures us. We had already given up our journey, but resume it.
