Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 11, 1871

Overview

Warm weather brings departure preparations, but Fidi's illness and Richard's despondency dominate the household. Cosima finds the sight of a sick child almost unbearable. Evening reading of Frau Wesendonck's Frederick earns Richard's dismissal, while Malwida's letter reflects disgust at France's disorder.

Content

Very warm. Preparations for departure. Fidi very unwell; great concern; R. despondent. The face of a sick child hardly bearable.

In the evening R. looks through Frau Wesendonck’s Friedrich and describes it as “foolery.” Letter from M. Meysenbug, full of disgust with the mess in France.
