Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 2, 1871

Overview

Cosima's mother's departure leaves her moved by farewell and overcome by life's sadness. The return home is dampened by bad weather, illness in the household, and a small hurt between Cosima and Richard over a joke and his sensitivity. Rothschild's overpayment is the day's practical complication rather than any grave external news.

Sunday, April 2:

My mother leaves us; R. thanks her for having come. I am very moved as I embrace her for the last time; all the sadness of life overcomes me!

Dismal return home in dismal weather. R. offended by a joke on my part; I somewhat pained by his touchiness. Everyone with colds and indisposed; nothing from outside which could count as bad.

Rothschild sends me 1,000 francs too many.
