Diary Entry of March 24, 1871

Overview

Munich remains silent while Hohenlohe refuses help, confirming Richard's contempt for aristocrats turned bureaucrats. Parisian events grow more alarming as Cosima waits for her mother's delayed arrival and feels a shadow over the planned welcome. Friday, March 24:

Nothing from Munich. Instead, a letter of refusal from Prince Hohenlohe. “That is what has become of the aristocrats; they are all bureaucrats.”

The situation in Paris is becoming more and more unbelievable. At 1 o’clock to the railroad station to meet my mother. She does not arrive, which casts a slight shadow over the reception ceremony. But at 6 o’clock she arrives, and we spend the evening talking. She is well in spite of what she has been through and now faces.

Saturday, March 27: Stormy day. Talked over the past and future with my mother. She likes it here. I feel very strange toward her, but she is pleasant company because of her wide education. We talk a lot and about all sorts of things; the conditions in Paris are horrifying.
