Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 26, 1871

Overview

Fidi's bad night and Richard's effort to write to the King bring back the painful memory of Munich and its officials. Cosima contrasts those burdens with the relief of seeing the Swiss mountains each day. A walk, a touching soldier's letter, Carlyle's truthfulness, and continuing concern for Fidi define the subdued day.

Content

Sunday, February 26:

Fidi had a really wretched night. R. has a wretched day; he intends to write to the King, and this involves him in a dismal round of reflections.

All our experiences in Munich come back into our minds at lunch, and I end by saying that I thank God I now see the Rigi and Pilatus mountains every day instead of Pfistermeister or Duflipp.

Fine day, R. goes out walking, I stay at home and play with the children. He brings back a letter from Sergeant Nolte, naive and touching.

In the evening, Carlyle, whose truthfulness pleases us.

Fidi indisposed.
