Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 19, 1871

Overview

Snow returns, but the household is brightened by Fidi's first place at the family table and by games with the children. Nietzsche's letter brings admiring words about Beethoven, while Gibbon and Grimm remain points of evening reflection. Richard's declaration of respect leaves Cosima answering inwardly with gratitude for his love.

Thursday, January 19:

Snow again, winter is starting anew. R. orchestrates, I with the children. Then family lunch, Fidi sitting at table for the first time, great joy and gaiety.

After lunch games with the children and reading. R. is pleased to see me sitting among the six of them; Willi Stocker is also there. Letter from Prof. Nietzsche; he quotes some very fine words of his friend Rohde about Beethoven.

In the evening Gibbon. Recalling his childish judgment on the Germans, R. says, "Yes, Jakob Grimm was a sort of mother figure." As we part, late in the evening, R. exclaims to me, "You are the only person for whom I have respect." Good heavens, and what would I be without his love?
