Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 13, 1871

Overview

Cosima's eye trouble forces practical caution, while a dispute over the borrowed sleigh is settled by hiring one elsewhere. The day mixes family errands, letters of admiration for Richard, and amusement over Gibbon's historical names. Richard remains absorbed in a passage of orchestration, judging its splendor against even the coronation march.

Friday, January 13:

Since my eyes are very weak, I consult the eye specialist; I have to take care of my eyesight.

A friendly New Year's greeting from Frau Wille; on the other hand, an unpleasant exchange with Colonel Am Rhyn about the sleigh. He objects to our use of it; we give in immediately and hire one from the town. With R. fetched Loulou from school. Richter has a letter from my father, sending greetings to "our great master."

In the evening Gibbon; the field marshal Successianus gives us great delight, and I observe that it would be a good nickname for Fidi. Richard is very much occupied with one passage in his instrumentation; he says he could not endow even the coronation march with more splendor than this scene of recognition between Siegfried and Brunnhilde.
