Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 3, 1870

Overview

Wagner remains unwell and unable to work with any appetite, which Cosima experiences as one of her hardest trials. The children are well, she walks with them after lessons, and music with Richter provides activity amid snow. Evening reading of David Strauss's lectures brings irritation at the book's slovenly style and mannered treatment.

Saturday, December 3:

R. still unwell and with no inclination to work; that is for me the hardest test, may Heaven help me to bear it! The children well, walk with them after work, then music with Richter. — (My cushion finished, started on leggings again!) In the evening continued reading David Strauss’s lectures, begun yesterday. Much dissatisfaction with the book, the style of which is as slovenly as a student’s and again very mannered. (Snow.)
