Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 27, 1870

Overview

Wagner greets Cosima with song and calls her his melody, turning the morning into another private lyric scene. Breakfast with Richter and Nietzsche is shadowed by concern over the sizable Loire army and the worries of German colleagues in Basel. A walk, music, Count Bassenheim's visit, the first act of Siegfried, and articles against Perfall fill a day balanced between affection, war anxiety, and artistic work.

Sunday, November 27:

“Nothing is so dear to me as the room in which I bide, for near me dwells my fair neighbor side by side,” sings R. to me in the morning; then he comes in and says, “There is a melody lying in bed, a really big one, you are my melody.”

Breakfast with Richter and the Prof.; I greatly concerned: the Loire army is described as very substantial (120,000) and is reported to be well led. Prof. Nietzsche says that he and his German colleagues in Basel are extremely worried!

We take a walk with the children. Then music; in the afternoon a visit from Count B. In the evening, first act of Siegfried. Richter has received some articles exposing Perfall, which make him glad.
