Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 19, 1870

Overview

Work with the children, a walk with Wagner, and evening reading form the quiet structure of the day. Schure's furious French essay provokes Wagner into renewed anger over Alsace and loyalty. Cosima's headaches darken both sleep and waking life, leaving her with a persistent sense of melancholy.

Saturday, November 19:

Work with the children as usual, take a walk with R., read with him in the evening. A letter from our friend Schuré, who encloses a furious French essay written by himself! R. is indignant about it and says I should ask him whether Poland, Ireland, and other nations had ever been as disloyal as Alsace is to Germany.

I am not very well, headaches cloud both my waking and my sleeping hours, bringing me feelings of the melancholy of life.
