Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 25, 1870

Overview

Wagner again dreams uneasily of his late wife, especially her refusal to recognize the present marriage and his old anxieties about supporting her. The household spends the day packing for the planned Zurich excursion. In the evening he reads biographical passages about Sulzer and Hagenbuch, preparing for meetings that will connect the trip with old memories.

Content

Tuesday, October 25:

R. dreams again about his wife, that she was unwilling to recognize our marriage; again that permanent feature in R.’s dreams, that he is worried about her money, whether he has sent her any, a prolongation of his constant concern, in real life, to keep her well supplied.

The day is spent in packing, our excursion to Zurich is fixed for tomorrow. In the evening R. reads us the passages in his biography concerning Sulzer and Hagenbuch, whom Richter will also meet the day after tomorrow. (I write to Ottilie Brockhaus.)
