Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 19, 1870

Overview

Cosima marks the fifteenth anniversary of her betrothal to Hans and hopes, through the children, for some healing of the suffering she caused him. War news, Loulou's continued illness, a visit to Countess Bassenheim, and music structure the day. Wagner sings the Wanderer and Mime scene from Siegfried, while Cosima remains haunted by the death of old Fritz as the loss of a guardian presence.

Content

Wednesday, October 19:

I remember my betrothal 15 years ago, under the auspices of the Tannhäuser Overture in Berlin. How I should like to make good the suffering I have caused Hans! Perhaps it will be given to the children to do it—hope so. From France the news that Vesoul has been taken. Sitting beside Lulu, who is still in bed, I write to Franz Lenbach. After lunch to Countess Bassenheim’s. In the evening, music; R. sings to me the wonderful scene in Siegfried between the Wanderer and Mime.

All day long I have been thinking of old Fritz; I feel as if in him we have lost a guardian spirit.
