Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 7, 1870

Overview

Summerlike weather lets the children play outside all day and allows Fidi his first outing in Cosima's crocheted frock. Wagner walks alone, leaving the household in a quiet rhythm of recovery and display. The evening's reading on Spontini and Wagner's affectionate name for the portrait keep art and domestic presence gently intertwined.

Friday, October 7:

Most lovely weather, almost summer! The children play all day long, and Fidi taken out for the first time in the finery of the frock crocheted by me. R. goes for a walk alone. In the evening read the article about Spontini in the biography. R. calls the portrait “my elegant visitor.”
