Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 1, 1870

Overview

Cosima suffers a bad night and struggles with the spa cure, but the practical path toward marriage advances. Wagner's visit to Pastor Tschudi leaves him confident that the divorce document should remove major obstacles, and he answers Cosima's doubts by saying he wishes union with no one but her. She orders traditional Lucerne wedding rings, while a London report of Der fliegende Hollaender's success adds a distant professional note to the day.

Monday, August 1:

Very bad night; dreams of being pursued; I force myself to continue my cure with R., but it has a bad effect on me. Letter from Frl. v. Meysenbug; she is on the Sonnenberg. At eleven, as a storm approaches, R. goes off to see the Protestant parson Tschudi, from whom he returns very content. When the document announcing my divorce is received here, we shall probably have no difficulties at all. R., when I ask him whether all of this is agreeable to him, says he knows of no creature anywhere in the world with whom he would wish to be united except me! If he had not had me, he says, he would have entered a monastery.

In the afternoon I order our wedding rings, in the traditional Lucerne form. In the evening a letter from Herr Praeger in London, reporting on the performance there of Der fliegende Holländer (in Italian) and its success.
