Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 28, 1870

Overview

Bismarck's disclosures about Benedetti's proposals confirm for Cosima the dishonesty and danger of French diplomacy. The household receives Nietzsche and then the French visitors, keeping sociability alive despite the political strain. Music from the Norns' scene and Tristan closes a day in which public scandal and private artistic life remain tightly intertwined.

Content

Thursday, July 28:

Worked with the children. The newspapers report some splendid revelations by Bismarck; he has had the Times informed of the proposals which Benedetti unceasingly made to him (French invasion of Austria, so that they might then conquer Belgium, then supplies for the Southern states, enabling them to take over French Switzerland, and other savory things of that sort). The French do not know what to say, except that the Emperor knew nothing about it, or that Bismarck had provoked it all.

Visit from Prof. Nietzsche; in the evening the French visitors, music, the Norns’ scene, and Tristan.
