Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 25, 1870

Overview

Cosima feels crushed by war anxiety, especially after a telegram announces that fighting may be imminent. She prays with the children for the Germans, visits Countess Bassenheim, and receives friends in the evening while the household waits for news. Wagner seizes on her thought that music goes beyond beauty as the foundation for his Beethoven essay, turning an anxious day into intellectual momentum.
