Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 6, 1870

Overview

Wagner’s misunderstanding of Cosima’s diary hurts her deeply, and illness prevents the planned Pilatus outing when the doctor forbids it. Close weather, restless children, Count Bassenheim’s visit, and news about the king’s unwillingness to receive the Countess keep the day heavy. Dichterleben offers significant material in the evening, though Wagner and Cosima deny Tieck the stature of a true poet.

Wednesday, July 6:

R. has read and misunderstood some things in my diary, which pains me deeply. The doctor comes and forbids me to go on the Pilatus outing. Terribly close, the children running around in their nightgowns. Visit from Count B. The King appears not to wish to receive the Countess; he never likes seeing women. In the afternoon I go for a drive, in the evening continue with Dichterleben. A great deal in it of significance, only Tieck, whatever he is, is no poet.
